| 7 | ![]() ![]() | 1890 | Piankatank (Steamship : 1912).; Baltimore, Chesapeake & Atlantic Railway Company. | Passenger ships–Designs and plans.; Steam-engines–Maintenance and repair. | Midship section, details of engines, stern-pipes, and plans of starboard engine bed plates for Hull 257 of the Harlan and Hollingsworth Company, which was originally named Neuse. Handwritten notes on several of the plans indicate that they were for Piankatank, ex-Neuse. Piankatank was purchased for service on the Maryland, Delaware and Virginia Railroad Line. This grouping of plans which pertain to the starboard engine in particular may suggest that they were pulled for a July 1928 repair to that engine when it became disabled off Solomons Island on a trip to the Eastern Shore. At that point, the vessel belonged to the Baltimore, Chesapeake and Atlantic Railway Company. | MS0777/01-02.03 | ||||

United States; Passenger ships–Designs and plans.; Ocean–Maps.; Hydrological surveys.; Pilot guides.; Merchant ships–Designs and plans.; Passenger ships–Design and construction. | The collection consists entirely of plans and drawings, specifications and sea charts. The chief interest of the collection lies in the ships plans. The presence of plans and drawings here is indicative of Douty's interest in ship construction, both professionally as a naval architect and as a maritime curator. The preponderance of the plans come from yards owned by Bethlehem Steel during his time of employment there. The plans from other places, such as Newport News Shipbuilding and New York Shipbuilding, may have been collected when the Bethlehem yards repaired ships built in those other yards. --Among the coast surveys and ocean charts, of interest is an Atlantic Ocean pilot map from 1916, parts of which were based on Lieut. Matthew Maury's original charts from the 1850s. The charts all come from either the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey or from the United States Hydrographic Office, formerly the US Navy Hydrographic Office. The latter was the publisher of British Admiralty charts of worldwide waters during the emergency period from 1938 up to 1968, some of which are also found in this collection. | MS0777 | ||||
